The brush parted behind Eden. She looked around to see Derek entering the bower.

A new pink frock, and a ribbon to tie,

If baby is good and ceases to cry.

He gazed down at her, his expression gloomy and guarded. She turned her back to him and focused her attention on Anna’s song.

“What have we here?” Derek asked. His voice was light, but she knew the pleasant tone was pretense for Anna’s benefit.

“Dirk,” Anna cried. “Did you hear my song? Wasn’t it nice?”

“Like an angel,” he said, looking straight at Eden. “But you shouldn’t be alone so near the river. We’ve talked about that, liebchen, have we not?”

“But I’m not alone, Dirk,” Anna piped. “My friend, Mrs. Palmer, is here. Don’t you see her?”

“Yes. I see her.”

“I must go,” Eden said quickly, and rose from her knees.

Anna asked, “Please, may I come see your puppies? Next week, maybe, when they’re bigger. Dirk will bring me. Won’t you, Dirk?”

What could she do? She could hardly refuse the child. “Why, yes. That would be fine. Good-bye, Anna. I’ll see you soon.”

She tried to hurry by Derek, but he caught her arm. His touch sent misery racing through her to the tips of her toes. “Don’t,” she whispered. “It’s only because of Anna.”

He released her, but murmured, “For Anna, then. Until we meet again, fraulein."
